Aching, Heavy And Tired Legs >>   Back To Articles

Many women and some men suffer uncomfortable leg feelings as part of their everyday life. A recent study in Edinburgh showed that more than 50% of women and up to 20% of men in the general population had aching, heavy or tense feeling legs. Although these feelings are not necessarily an indication of a serious condition, they do affect the quality of life.

Many people put up with these feelings, because they think they're an unavoidable part of getting older. However, these leg discomforts are often related to general lifestyle and other factors in everyday life, which affect the action of the leg veins. Excessive pooling of the blood in the leg veins and a build up of fluid inside the tissues is the source of the discomfort.

There are many ways to combat tired legs. At Scintera, we believe that the best way to look after your legs is to invest in compression hosiery. Compression stockings are not only the best way to manage tired legs, they are a good way to prevent spider veins, varicose veins and are highly effective at reducing the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) on long trips.

Also Tired Legs and Feet could also be a condition referred to as tired leg syndrome. Tired leg syndrome may be the result of venous insufficiency in which improper blood flow causes swelling, varicose veins, and/or oedema. Tired leg syndrome, or tired feet and legs, may also be caused by neuropathy, or nerve damage. Generally tired feet cause your legs and feet to feel sore and heavy, and walking may become painful.

If you're experiencing tired feet or tired leg syndrome, talk to your doctor or health care provider about treatment options. Tired feet and legs can be caused by a variety of different things from leg health problems and swelling to injuries and trauma. Often, once the underlying health condition is treated, your symptoms of tired leg syndrome disappear or at least lessen.

If your tired feet and legs are being caused by poor circulation in your legs, you can try simple exercises such as walking to help alleviate the pain. Walking and avoiding prolonged sitting or standing will help improve your circulation. You can also try lying down for at least five minutes at a time a few times throughout the day with your legs elevated.

Graduated support stockings and socks, known by specialists as compression therapy, are often recommended by doctors to help prevent and treat tired feet. This special leg wear can help energise your tired legs and feet by promoting healthy blood flow between your legs and heart.

One thing that most people do not know is that even young people can have serious venous disease. Medical specialists agree that spider and varicose veins will return unless the underlying root cause of the problem is treated.

Most patients seeking treatment for unsightly spider veins and varicose veins go to a vein clinic. The clinic will explain that spider veins and varicose veins are often the result of an underlying problem with valves that prevent backward flow of blood through these vessels. The incompetent valves mean that the problem is likely to come back in time unless lifestyle measures are taken to reduce the risks.

The best ways to reduce the risk of venous insufficiency are to:
  • Walk 20 minute per day
  • Use compression stocking and garments
  • Elevate legs to the same level as the heart periodically
